Seasonal Influenza/Vaccine Information
Information for Students:
Message from the Office of Student Affairs and
Enrollment Management:

Dear Students:
As a follow-up to ensuring our campus community stays healthy throughout the year and in particular during flu season, I wanted to alert you that seasonal flu shots will be available in Student Health and Wellness—and according to the CDC this is the number one form of flu prevention. The seasonal flu vaccine is different from the H1N1 vaccine, which will be released by the CDC in late October. More information on H1N1 vaccine distribution will be forwarded as it becomes available.
The seasonal flu vaccine will be available in Student Health and Wellness (located at 4825 Troost, room 115) beginning Monday, September 21st—no appointment needed. Students will receive a special subsidized rate of $10 for the seasonal flu vaccine.
In addition, Student Health and Wellness will offer Flu Vaccine Clinics at various locations around campus for your convenience:
• September 25th (10am-1pm)—Dental School
• October 5th and 6th (10am-2pm)—Health Sciences Building Lobby
• Oct 8th (10am-2pm)—University Center Alumni Room
• Oct 14th (11am-2:30pm)—Law School Jury Room
• Oct 21st (10am-2pm)—Haag Hall, Women’s Center Conference Room
Again, if you experience fever and flu-like symptoms, you should stay at home and seek medical attention for assessment (Student Health and Wellness can be reached at 816.2356133). Contact your instructors by phone or e-mail to let them know you are ill and will be missing class; make sure you arrange make-ups of missed course assignments.
Symptoms typically last 3-7 days and you should stay home until you have been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications. For students who have clinical rotation or other off-campus practicum experiences as part of your program, please keep in mind that some locations require students and staff to remain at home for a full week even if you no longer have symptoms (contact your clinical advisor for more information).

UM FACULTY AND STAFF BENEFITS ANNOUNCEMENT - FLU
SHOT INFORMATION
With the coming of seasonal flu and the current H1N1 flu, UM Faculty & Staff Benefits has scheduled flu vaccination clinics for each campus beginning in late October. The timing of the clinics has been recommended by the vendor that will provide the vaccinations.
At this time, the clinics that are currently scheduled will be providing the seasonal flu shot. Currently there is insufficient information available to know when and through what distribution points the H1N1 flu shot/s will be available since the serum is being provided by the U.S government with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) directing production and distribution.
The seasonal flu shot will be administered at no cost to those who are enrolled in the UM Choice Health Care program. The seasonal flu shot will not be given to anyone under 9 years of age. Children ages 9 through 18 must be accompanied by a parent. If you are enrolled in the Catastrophic program or do not have coverage under the UM Choice Health Care program, there will be a fee of $26.
Both types of vaccinations are covered as preventive from network and non-network providers for anyone enrolled in the UM Choice Health Care program. If you receive the vaccination through our flu clinics or another network provider, there will be no charge. If you receive the vaccination through a non-network provider, you will be reimbursed for 80% of the charge if you have not already met the $200 annual maximum for preventive care – the annual deductible does not apply.
UMKC faculty/staff vaccination schedule:
• November 3; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm — Administrative Center, Loose Park Room
• November 4; 10:00 am - 5:00 pm — University Center
• November 5; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm — Hospital Hill Campus — Health Sciences Bldg, Room 4302
The complete schedule with dates, time, and locations for all four UM campuses can be viewed on the UM Faculty & Staff Benefits web site.
