UMKC WOMEN'S COUNCIL

Women helping women
In 1967, several forward-thinking women came together to do something
significant and unheard of in support of the University and its women.
Together they forged an organization devoted to involving women from
the community in the life of the University; to helping women understand
what opportunities are open to them; and to helping women achieve success
in their graduate and professional education.
In pursuit of its goals, the Women's Council sponsors a number of annual and ongoing events and programs. A hallmark of Women's Council programs, the Graduate Assistance Fund has sponsored fellowships and short-term assistance for 1,257 exceptional women graduate students at UMKC. Members and friends contribute annually to the GAF endowment or establish lasting gifts through named awards.
High among the educational offerings of the Women's Council shines the annual Starr Symposium, co-sponsored by the Women's Center. The Starr Symposium examines the progress and needs of women locally, nationally and globally. The Women's Council also works through the Women's Collaborative to achieve its educational objectives.
Of course, the Women's Council doesn't "make it happen" without its members making things happen. Today, the UMKC Women's Council is one of the most active and committed groups serving the University. More than 300 women and men are actively engaged with the Council's ongoing efforts to reinforce women's pursuit of higher education and life-long learning.
Women helping women. A revolutionary concept? Not in today's world. But a powerful reality that the Women's Council helps perpetuate for UMKC and the Kansas City area community.
