UMKC Web Policy, Requirements and Recommendations

Content requirements

The UMKC Web Executive Group, in conjunction with the Web Advisory Group, will oversee enforcement and regulation of the UMKC Web Site.

1. Home Page

1.1) UMKC Homepage Features

a)  The UMKC Homepage will display five rotating Features.

b) UMKC Homepage Features must convey and reinforce the University’s core mission areas and goals.

c) All UMKC Homepage Features must include accompanying photos and/or other visual elements.

d) All UMKC Homepage Features must be “tagged” to one or more pre-defined categories (TBD) for archiving and custom search capability.

e) UMKC Homepage Features will highlight University-wide programs, activities or events that affect a majority of the UMKC community or generate significant exposure for the University.

1.2) UMKC Homepage News and Announcements

a) UMKC Homepage News and Announcements will consist of four (4) links that will link to articles on the UMKC News page or to other internal sites or documents. Homepage News and Announcement links must not link to pages outside the UMKC Web site.

1.3) UMKC Homepage Important Dates

a) UMKC Homepage Important Dates will consist of four (4) dates followed by the event name, which will link to selected entries from the main UMKC Calendar of Events.

1.4) UMKC Marketing Tiles

a) UMKC Homepage Marketing Tiles will consist of up to four (4) tiles reserved for revenue-generating University activities and events, or University events generating significant exposure for the University.

b) Marketing tiles must be accompanied by a one to four-word description, less than 35 characters long, that will appear beneath the tile.

c) Marketing tiles must link to a single Web page or Web site with the appropriate information.

1.5) UMKC Homepage Icons

a)  UMKC Homepage Icons consist of Blackboard, Pathway and Webmail icons, which must link directly to the associated Web site/page displayed.

1.6) UMKC Emergency Information

a) The UMKC Homepage will be configured to temporarily display emergency notification information related to weather alerts and crisis communications as circumstances warrant.

2. UMKC Web Site Audience Pages

2.1) All UMKC Web Site Audience Pages must include:

a) A main header that mirrors the name of the link on the homepage (e.g., “Future Students” or “Invest in UMKC”).

b) A minimum of six and maximum of 10 Featured Links.

c) A single photo that reflects the page’s intended audience. Photos must be 355px by 170px.

d) Four column headings that reside below the Featured Links section.  Each column will contain a minimum of three and a maximum of 10 links and a header name that summarizes the grouping. The links should be descriptive and user friendly – not entire URLs. Links must not run longer than two lines.

e) Up to three marketing tiles stacked along the left side of the page, below the left-hand navigation. Each marketing tile must be 180 pixels wide x 97 pixels tall, accompanied by a one- to four-word description less than 35 characters long that will appear below the tile.

f) For Phase I, the top story and accompanying graphic under the News section will be the most current Feature displayed on the UMKC Homepage. The four links underneath will mirror the links under the News and Announcements section of the Homepage. The four Event links will mirror the links under the Important Dates section of the Homepage.

2.2) UMKC Audience Page Navigation

All UMKC Audience Pages must contain the University header, footer and left-hand (audience) navigation.

3. UMKC Web Site Drilldown Pages

3.1) All UMKC Web Site Drilldown Pages must include:

a) A main header that mirrors the name of the link on the homepage (e.g., “Future Students” or “Invest in UMKC”).

b) Up to three marketing tiles stacked along the left side of the page. Each marketing tile must be 180 pixels wide x 97 pixels tall, accompanied by a one- to four-word description less than 35 characters long that will appear below the tile.

c) Content relevant to the focus of the page.

d) Up to three marketing tiles stacked along the left side of the page, below the left-hand navigation. Each marketing tile must be 180 pixels wide x 97 pixels tall, accompanied by a one- to four-word description less than 35 characters long that will appear below the tile.

3.2) UMKC Audience Page Navigation

All UMKC Audience Pages must contain the University header, footer and left-hand (audience) navigation.

4. UMKC A-Z Index

The A-Z Index is a guide to official UMKC Web sites/pages and general, University-wide information.

Unofficial UMKC Web pages will not be listed in the A-Z Index.

Examples of "general University-wide information" are transcripts, individual majors, enrollment, etc.

4.1) The following elements are required of all A-Z Index listings:

a) Web Policy Compliance
All A-Z Index listings must be official University Web pages or general University information. The official Web pages must adhere to the UMKC Web Policy, including Security Policy, Legal/Liability Policy and Technical and Content Requirements. Official pages will follow the Web Executive Group's schedule for compliance to the Web Policy.  

Sites that don't comply with the requirements according to the Web Executive Group's compliance schedule will be removed from the A-Z Index until they comply.

b) Contact Information
Either a URL or a phone number is required for each listing. Both may be included.
