UMKC Orientation » Advising Checklist

Congratulations on taking the next step in attending UMKC! Below is a list of things to think about and gather prior to attending orientation. Academic Advisers will discuss these topics with you in further detail.

  • Activate your UMKC email account at www.umkc.edu/exchange-faq/ and bring a copy of your user name and password to assist in course registration.
  • Complete the online Math Entrance Test prior to orientation to determine which math course you are ready for and should be placed in. Learn more at http://cas.umkc.edu/math/
  • Have any dual credit transcripts sent directly to UMKC from the College/University where you received the credit.
    • Freshmen: dual credit classes are not identified as college classes on your high school transcript so make sure an official copy of this transcript is sent directly from the institution where you received the credit. Make a list of all college courses and bring it with you in the case that you attend an orientation before the transcripts are received.
    • Since you may be attending an orientation before UMKC has received all final transcripts, please make a list of all courses you have taken for college credit (include the exact course number and title and the College/University where you took it).
  • Freshmen: make sure all score reports from exams for which you hope to receive college credit are sent directly to UMKC. Make a list of all exams and your score (if you know it) just in case you attend an orientation before your scores are received. A quick check will give you some idea of the credit you might expect to receive for:
    • Advanced Placement (AP)
    • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • Make a list of your academic strengths and areas of difficulty.
    • You don't want to take all of your tough courses at the same time.
  • Consider how many classes/credit hours you want to take your first semester.
    • Students typically average 3-5 classes per semester, which equals 12-16 credit hours.
  • Think about what responsibilities you'll have outside of coursework.
    • Some things to consider include: a part-time or full-time job, family obligations and community involvement.
  • Come with a list of questions so that your academic adviser may fully assist you.
