Collapse of Women’s Prison at 15th and Grand Research Notes (KC0349)

Native Sons Archives (NSA)

Mildred C. Cox, a Kansas City historian, gathered documentary information concerning the Collapse of the Women’s Prison in Kansas City, Missouri, on August 13, 1863. The exact cause of the collapse had not been established, and local legend suggested that the “murder” of several “Southern-sympathizer” women prisoners had sparked the Quantrill raid in Lawrence. Cox believed that documentary facts should be available locally for historical research. She donated these materials to the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas City in 1956.

This gift consists of research correspondence and typed transcripts of historical documents, and Photostats of original documents from the National Archives concerning the event on August 13, 1863. 1955-1956.
