Mattie P. Burton (1882-1982) Papers (KC0144)

In about 1915 Mattie Burton relocated from Nebraska to Kansas City where her brother, O.D. Burton, had established the Burton Publishing Company. Miss Mattie worked with her brother in the publishing business until he died in 1957. She then continued as president of the company. She was an active member of the National League of American Pen Women. She first joined the Kansas City Chapter in 1921 and fifteen years later helped found the Westport Branch of the National League of American Pen Women in which she was an active member until her death.

These papers include a four-page manuscript letter, undated and unsigned, presumably by Miss Burton's mother describing her experiences as a pioneer in Indiana and Nebraska; a one page biographical statement on Mattie Burton; and two drafts by Mattie Burton of a resume (1958) of Westport Branch activities. 1958.
