Mabel Spielman (1879-1968) Papers (KC0182)

Margaret Mabel Spielman was born seven miles north of Iowa City, Iowa, but later moved to Webb City, Missouri. She was a devout Christian who filled her correspondence with Christian ideals and prayers. Miss Spielman rented rooms to boarders, worked in an office and also sold milk to support herself. She was married four times and divorced at least twice. Miss Spielman died at her home in Webb City where she lived most of her life. A large portion of the papers consist of correspondence. Early outgoing correspondence was written by Mabel to her second husband, Howard Wickham. The majority of the correspondence is incoming letters signed W.H.W. It is believed that Lester Smith, Mabel's first husband, may have been W.H.W.

These letters contain information on the day to day lives of the correspondents. Later correspondence is outgoing and addressed to an Albert Wells. Other miscellaneous papers and photographs of Mabel Spielman and other family members are also included in the collection. 1888-1968.
