American Royal Records (KC265)

Founded in October 1899 as the National Hereford Show, the American Royal got its name in 1901 from a comment that the livestock at Kansas City was better than those at the British Agricultural Royal. The Show grew to include other breeds of cattle, plus sheep, swine, poultry, draft horses, a horse show, a rodeo, and barbecue cookoff. Along with the Horse and Livestock Show, there was a parade through downtown Kansas City and the coronation of a queen elected from the Future Farmers of America State Sweethearts. The American Royal is supported by a Board of Governors, the BOTAR (Belles of the American Royal), the Saddle and Sirloin Club, and many volunteers.

The Records contain papers, photographs, scrapbooks, magazines, programs, ledgers, motion picture film, videotape, and other items relating to the American Royal Show. ca. 1899-1990
