Collapse of Women’s Prison at 15th and Grand Research Notes
Mildred C. Cox, a Kansas City historian, gathered documentary
information concerning the Collapse of the Women’s Prison in Kansas City,
Missouri, on August 13, 1863. The exact cause of the collapse had not been
established, and local legend suggested that the “murder” of several
“Southern-sympathizer” women prisoners had sparked the Quantrill raid in
