 CLASS TITLE: Manuscript Specialist code: 6001

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To process manuscript collections.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Arrange collection; clean and mend damaged papers; may translate materials.

Write objective, pertinent and concise finding aids for collection, taking into consideration patron needs and research possibilities in relations to material under review.

Perform related duties, such as assist in reading room, make workshop presentations, and work on special projects (such as preparing bibliographies or compiling biographical data).

May prepare exhibits for tours and meetings.

May be responsible for handling yearly additions to archives of professional organizations.

May prepare collections for microfilming, inserting necessary targets and instructions for camera operator.

Attend conferences, seminars, and professional meetings.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from a Senior Manuscript Specialist, or the Associate or Assistant Director, Western Historical Manuscript Collection.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Functional supervision may be exercised over 1 or 2 office support staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in history or one of the humanities or social sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired as necessary.

Some experience in research and knowledge of a foreign language is desirable.


 CLASS TITLE: Graduate Research Assistant -- Hare and Hare Records Project

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

To process manuscript collections.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

Assist in the arrangement of the Hare and Hare Records; clean and mend damaged papers.

Record pertinent and concise information for the finding aids to the records, taking into consideration patron needs and research possibilities in relations to material under review.

Enter data into computerized databases and word processors.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General supervision is received from a Manuscript Specialist working with the Project or the Associate Director, Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Kansas City.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None.

QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree in history or one of the humanities, the social sciences, architectural, or urban planning, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired as necessary.
