Mack B. Nelson House, Southwest Corner, 55th Street & Ward Parkway.
Under construction at the same time as the Corrigan house across 55th Street [then called “Santa Fe Road”], the M.B. Nelson house anchors the southwest corner of the intersection. Nelson was then a Vice-President of Long-Bell Lumber Company and later came to the top position in the company after Long suffered financial reverses early in the Depression. The house was built essentially as a large rectangle around an interior atrium with a movable roof. Its front doors face 55th Street, even though the house has the address of 5500 Ward Parkway. It was one of the largest houses built in Kansas City to that time.
