The Armour Fields Golf Club Course on Ward Parkway, 1920s.
A more adult form of recreation occurred along Ward Parkway for decades. From the 1920s through the 1940s, parts of the later residential sections south of Meyer Circle were used, as shown this photograph, for the Armour Hills Golf Club. Never a “country club” as such, this golf club was organized by the Nichols Company to appeal to Country Club District residents who could not gain entrance to the Kansas City or Mission Hills Country Clubs. The course was always located on company-owned land. In its last days of existence just after World War II, the golf club was located entirely on the Kansas side of State Line Road south of 65th Street.
