Leslie S. Barber (1885-1966) Papers (KC0118)

Leslie Sanford Barber was born in Kansas in 1885.  He was raised on a farm and received his education in the public schools.  He attended Kansas State Normal School at Emporia in 1901 and for part of the school year in 1902.

After some time in the Texas oil fields, Barber entered the Railway Mail Service on January 31, 1906 and commenced work in the transfer office in Atchison, Kansas.  He later began working on the mail cars and on December 15, 1906 he was appointed to the Kansas City and Pueblo Railway Post Office.  He apparently served on that line for the remainder of his active time with the Railway Mail Service.

Barber was an active member of the Kansas City Branch of the Railway Mail Association and the National Postal Transport Association as well as the United Federation of Postal Clerks.  He served the Kansas City Branch in various capacities including Assistant Secretary, Second vice-president, Circulation Manager and Historian.

This collection consists of Barber’s research notes and writing, especially as they relate to his efforts to compile biographical sketches of postal clerks who worked on the Kansas City and Pueblo Railway Post Office.  Also included are some lists of postal clerks who served on other lines as well as some reminiscences about his family and family friends.  A brief set of genealogical notes on the Barber family is included as well as assorted newspaper clippings.  1950-1966.
