Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Background

The month of April has been designated Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in the United States. The goal of SAAM is to raise public awareness about sexual violence and to educate communities and individuals on how to prevent sexual violence. Read President Obama's proclamation declaring April Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month Tables

  • Tuesday, April 2 (Oak Street Residence Hall, 5051 Oak St.), Thursday, April 11 (Royall Hall, 800 E. 52nd St.), and Monday, April 22 (Health Sciences Building, 2436 Charlotte)
  • Noon-2:00 p.m.
  • Come check out our tables with information about sexual assault and what to do if you or a friend has experience sexual violence. We'll also have information about campus and community resources.

Make a Statement with Denim

  • Thursday, April 4 (Women's Center, 105 Haag Hall)
  • 5:00-7:00 p.m.
  • Come show your support and design jeans to make a statement against sexual assault. Jeans will be used in the Denim Day 2013 display April 15-24.

Denim Day USA

  • Wednesday, April 24 (All over campus and in the community)
  • All day
  • Join this sexual violence prevention and education campaign and make a social statement with fashion by wearing jeans as a visible means of protest against the misconceptions surrounding sexual assault. Look for displays across campus with more information about this movement.

Take Back the Night

  • Thursday, April 25 (UMKC Quad, 52nd & Rockhill Rd) -- rescheduled due to weather
  • Starts at the UMKC Quad at 6:30 p.m.
  • Free tee shirt and dinner
  • Join us for Take Back the Night, an event designed to unify women, men, and children in an awareness of violence against women, children, and families. Together with community members, organizations, and other campus groups, we will take a stand against violence until our nights, our days, our homes, and campuses are safe for everyone!
