9:00                       Welcome and Introductions

 

9:15 – 10:00       Equity Profile of the Kansas City Region: The Kansas City Regional Equity Network, Damon Daniel (CCO) and Gloria Ortiz-Fisher, Westside Housing

Presentation of a demographic profile for our region, how our region is changing in terms of diversity, and some of the implications for providing education to a changing student population that supports UMKC’s urban mission.

 

10:00 – 10:45    Interdisciplinary research and engagement in higher education -Jodi Rios

Her experience in public health interdisciplinary research and teaching related to the environmental challenges of inner-city St. Louis and the translation of this experience to other disciplines and cities.

 

10:45 – 11:30     Challenges of infusing community engagement and diversity in the classroom - Jodi Rios

Discuss the pedagogy of civic engagement in higher education and the implications of this to student learning outcomes.

 

11:30 – 12:00     Small group discussion (round table in large conference room)

Faculty from different disciplines will facilitate small group discussion of the pedagogy of civic engagement and its application to UMKC’s general education curriculum (Anchor 3).

 

12:00 – 12:15    Report back from small groups and sharing of ideas  

 

12:15 – 12:45    Lunch (sponsored by FaCET)
