New Student Orientation
New Student Orientation is an exciting one-day program packed with activities to prepare new Roos for success at UMKC. You'll make connections with other students, learn about campus resources, navigate campus and explore student organizations.
Who Attends New Student Orientation?
Fall/Summer Start
- All new, first-time college students and students with 24 or less transferrable credits at the time of admission are required to attend
- Transfer students with move than 24 transferrable credits are not required to attend, but strongly encouraged!
- All new, degree-seeking international students must attend International Student Orientation, held on the Thursday before the start of classes each Fall and Spring.
Spring Start
- Orientation is not required for students who start their classes in the Spring semester, though strongly encouraged!
Online Only Programs
- Students enrolled in Online Only programs are not required to attend Orientation.
Pathway to Enrollment - First Time College Students
- Step 1: Admission Confirmation
- Log into your application status page to confirm your plans to start classes at UMKC, and pay or defer your confirmation fee.
- Step 2: Register for Orientation
- On your application status page select a date and register. You can reschedule up to 10 days before the first scheduled date, if your preferred session is not full.
- Orientation registration opens on December 1st for Summer/Fall entry and on October 1st for Spring entry.
- Step 3: New Student Orientation Module
- Starting March 1, you will have access to the New Student Orientation Module that provides you with an introduction to UMKC resources. You will access this module through your application status page. This course will take approximately 30 minutes to complete, and must be done two weeks prior you scheduled orientation session to be enrolled in courses.
- Pro tip: make sure to complete all four quizzes, including the Acknowledgement of Completion, for the hold to drop off of your account.
- Starting March 1, you will have access to the New Student Orientation Module that provides you with an introduction to UMKC resources. - Step 4: Pre-Orientation Enrollment Survey
- In addition to the New Student Orientation Module, you must complete the Pre-Orientation Enrollment Survey. This will be available starting March 1st on your application status page.
- The Pre-Orientation Enrollment Survey will ask you how/when you want to take courses, what dual credit courses you have already taken, etc. Please take your time and answer thoroughly. Your advisor will enroll you in your first semester of courses based on your answers!
- Step 5: Math Placement Exam
- STEM or Business program-admitted students must complete the math placement exam unless they meet one or more of the following criteria:
- ACT Math sub-score of 22 or higher
- AP credit for Calculus AB or Calculus BC
- Dual credit for College Algebra or a higher-level math course
- College credit for College Algebra or a higher-level math course
- Completion of three or more units of a high school Algebra and higher math courses and a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
- If you meet any of these criteria, you do not need to take the placement exam for entry level math (Math 110). However, you may need to take a math placement exam to determine if you are eligible to be placed in a higher-level math course. Please contact your academic advisor with any questions.

- Step 6: Attend your scheduled Orientation day!
- First Time College students are required to attend an in-person Orientation session. If you do not attend your orientation session and fail to reschedule within 10 business days you will be dropped from your courses.
- Step 7: Register for Roo Welcome: Jump Into UMKC
- Jump into UMKC is an optional program that starts the Wednesday evening before classes begin. This program will give you a "jump" start to the semester by teaching you key skills and resources, guiding you through campus exploration, meeting your faculty and making connections with other incoming students. - Step 5: Schedule an appointment with Roo Advising
- Schedule an appointment with your assigned academic advisor through UMKC Connect or by calling Roo Advising at 816-235-1148. As an incoming transfer student, you should schedule your appointment to be one hour long.
- In addition to completing the New Student Orientation Module before meeting with your advisor, please also send in your official transcripts to the Office of Admissions so your advisor can accurately determine the next classes for your declared major.

- As a reminder, transfer students with 24 or less transferrable credit hours at the time of admission are required to attend Orientation. If you do not attend your orientation session and fail to reschedule within 10 business days you will be dropped from your courses.

Other To-Do Items
- Set up your UMKC single sign-on (SSO) username and password in Pathway. You will need the temporary password that was emailed to you when you applied to UMKC to set up your new password. If you no longer have the temporary password, follow the steps to create a new password.
- Submit your photo for your student ID, known as the Roo Card.
- Submit your housing application on the Residential Life website.
