Application Process

1. Read UMKC's Graduate Admission Requirements

2. Items needed to complete your application process

  • Transcripts from all post-secondary schools attended. Transcripts are considered official if they are received in a sealed envelope from the school or sent electronically to the Office of Admissions.

3. Complete and submit the general UMKC Application.

To submit the application, you will be prompted to pay the non-refundable application processing fee or request approval for a fee waiver.

Master of Arts in Art History

Additional items to complete your application process:

  • Official GRE scores (code 6872)


Items to be submitted to the Graduate Adviser in Art History, 204 Fine Arts Building, UMKC, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO 64100-2499:

  • A short (one-page) statement of purpose
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A short writing sample (preferably a short art history paper, 10 pages or less)

Master of Arts in Economics

Master of Arts in English

Applicants will be asked to submit the following materials with their online application:

  • Academic information, including institutions attended, degrees earned, GPA, foreign language experience, honors and awards and relevant work experience
  • Writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's writing abilities in the humanities in up to 15 pages of recent academic prose (upload file)
  • Statement of purpose that describes the applicant's academic and professional objectives in an essay of 500-600 words, discussing in detail their interest, research and writing in their emphasis area (upload file)
  • Three letters of recommendation that evaluate the applicant's readiness for graduate study written by three professors or others who know the applicant's abilities and potential well. (Applicants will provide email addresses, and recommenders will receive instructions to upload letters)
  • GRE score of 60 percent or higher on the verbal aptitude section (code:6872)
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantship application materials, if applying, including a 250-500 word teaching statement addressing the applicant's interest in and qualifications for teaching and an academic writing sample from an upper-level college course (upload files)

Please allow time so that all of the materials will be available for consideration by the deadline (September 15 for spring semester admission and January 15 for fall semester admission).

Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and Media Arts

Applicants will be asked to submit the following materials with their online application:

  • Academic information, including institutions attended, degrees earned, GPA, foreign language experience, honors and awards and relevant work experience
  • Writing sample that demonstrates the applicant's writing abilities. A sample in a single emphasis area (no more than 10 pages for poetry; no more than 20 pages for all other disciplines: fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting or screenwriting) is required (poems [6-10] or stories, essays, novel chapters or dramatic-work exceprts)
  • Statement of purpose that describes the applicant's academic and professional objectives. In an essay of 400 to 500 words, applicants should discuss in detail their interest in their emphasis area (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting or screenwriting), and their experience and goals in the area
  • Three letters of recommendation that evaluate the applicant's readiness for graduate study written by three professors or others who know the applciant's abilities and potential well. (Applicants will provide email addresses, and recommenders will receive instructions to upload letters)

  • Consult either the program adviser or faculty member who works in your chosen emphasis area
  • A statement of purpose in the form of a personal essay of approximately 1,000 words outlining the emphasis area you wish to pursue, your reasons for applying and your academic plans and goals
  • Three letters of recommendation

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A statement concerning your goals for graduate study, the nature of your interest in sociology, any past experiences that are relevant to this choice, and your future plans

Master of Arts in Studio Art

Items to be submitted to the Department of Art and Art History, 204 Fine Arts Building, UMKC, 5100 Rockhill Road, Kansas City, MO 64100-2499:

  • For all media, a CD or DVD is required with no more than 20 and no less than 15 images with a hardcopy listing the image's title, date, size and media. For graphic design and electronic media a CD or DVD containing work in jpeg/bmp/QT/AVI/Flash formats or printed hardcopy is required
  • A single-spaced, one-page typed personal statement of purpose describing your reasons for desiring to enter graduate-level study as well as ultimate professional ambitions. In this document, please address why you have chosen UMKC, what your work is about and why we should select you.
  • Three letters of recommendation from art professionals or professors

Master of Fine Arts Theatre: Acting

Items to be submitted to Department of Theatre, Attention Cynthia Stofiel, 404 Performing Arts Center, Honorary Patricia McIlrath Street, UMKC, 4949 Cherry Street, Kansas City, MO 64100-2499:

  • Three letters of recommendation each with recommendation form
  • Photo with resume
  • Statement of purpose including a two-page essay: page 1) most memorable moment you have had in the theatre and age 2) a defining moment you have had in life (unrelated to theatre)

These items are due January 15.

You will also be asked to audition/interview for admission.

Interdisciplinary Doctorate of Philosophy

  • Three letters of reference
  • Recommendation by Doctoral faculty review group in at least two participating disciplines

When completing your application for admission, select "Interdisciplinary Studies PhD" as your intended academic plan, then select one Primary Discipline and one or more Co-Discipline areas.
