Our Statement on Inclusive Excellence
Beliefs and mission
The ASM team believes that:
- An environment of inclusive excellence enhances everyone's experience.
- Each individual has unique identities, strengths and abilities.
- There are no limits to what any individual is capable of learning.
- We all learn better through collaboration and soliciting multiple perspectives.
- Everyone should have access to inclusive and welcoming learning environments and feel comfortable in the spaces in which they learn.
- Failure is an inherent part of everyone's experience and is what leads to growth.
- Everyone's voice has value, and each person should have opportunities to be heard.
- Everyone should be supported in their unique goals.
Based upon these beliefs, ASM's mission is to:
Provide innovative support services and resources to ensure educational access and personal success for every student.
Vision and commitment
ASM's vision is that:
Every UMKC student persists and graduates with the personal and professional skills to achieve their vision of success.
To achieve that vision, we collectively commit that we will:
- Foster a culture of open-mindedness.
- Solicit and appreciate multiple points of view.
- Seek to learn about one another and from one another.
- Demonstrate appreciation for each individual.
- Encourage everyone to be who they are.
- Celebrate our differences and recognize that our differences make us stronger.
- Help each student achieve their vision of success.
- Engage in continuous and ongoing learning, dialogue and collaboration, with an expectation that we will continually learn and grow.
- Elevate students' voices and hear their personal experiences regarding the impact of racism in their lives.
- Advocate for systems, structures and policies that promote inclusive excellence and opportunity.
- Encourage those interacting with our department to hold us accountable to these commitments and engage us in difficult conversations around inclusive excellence and opportunity.
