The Coaching Program aids UMKC students in navigating the college experience.  Peer coaches support students in their quest to score A's, try-out clubs & practice good study skills.  While any UMKC student can become a Coaching Scholar, specific programming is provided through Coaching for first-time freshmen, students on financial aid contracts and Henry W. Bloch, KC and Kauffman Scholars.

Our Mission

The Coaching program aims to provide students with necessary skills for their journey at UMKC by assisting them in becoming engaged with the university community and promoting life-long learning through critical thinking and social awareness.  We, as coaches, work to empower each Coaching Scholar towards personal, academic and financial prosperity via conecting Scholars to resources and aiding them in identifying partners in their educational journey.

What We Do

Through 1-on-1 and small group interaction, Coaches provide guided support to each Scholar through their first semesters on campus. The Peer Coach/Scholar relationship begins during convocation weekend and ends at the conclusion of the spring semester. Each Coach receives leadership training throughout the year so that they can best serve their Scholars varying  needs.

Each Coach connects their Scholars to academic resources and activities that align with the Scholars educational and personal goals. In turn, this strengthens the Scholars connection to campus and their pursuit of success. Our Coaches work collaboratively to develop skills and build relationships that have proven to be beneficial for years to come.

Our team is committed to student growth and development. All supplemental activities asked of each Scholar are carefully planned and selected to support their growth. Our goal is to help as many Scholars as possible continue to move ever closer to college graduation. The level of care that Coaches provide plays a key role in aiding Scholars during their first academic year at UMKC. Through the Coaching Program's supportitive nature, UMKC becomes a home away from home for all of our Scholars.
