Admission requirements

  • Freshmen and transfer students may apply to UMKC as pre-education majors and are admitted based on general university requirements.
  • Candidates for admission to the School of Education are required to complete the majority of their general education and pre-education coursework with a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) at the time of application (the priority deadline is March 1 of each year for admission the following fall).
  • Applicants who have graduated from high school within five years of admission to teacher education program must also submit a score for either the ACT or SAT exam.
  • A passing score on all sections of the College Basic Academic Subjects Examination (C-BASE) is required of all students.


  • Graduates can be found throughout Kansas City and the country in rewarding careers in education.
  • Many point to the focus on urban education and nationally accredited School of Education as the secret to their success.
  • Skills acquired in this program can be applied in any classroom setting.

Fast facts

  • 100 undergraduate students are enrolled in the elementary education program, and aproximately 125 students on campus taking courses to meet the departmental admissions requirements
  • Average class size of a junior/senior level class is 19 students


  • About 96 percent of the full-time faculty members have doctoral degrees from major colleges and universities. Approximately 75 percent have classroom experience at the elementary or secondary levels, in addition to their college teaching experience.
