Makini L. King, recipient of the 2021 Living the Values Award at UMKC, is a licensed counseling psychologist who currently serves as the director of diversity and inclusion initiatives. King attended Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where she earned her bachelor's degree with a psychology major and Spanish minor. She attended the University of Missouri- Kansas City where she received her master's degree and Ph.D. in counseling psychology. After completing a post-doctoral fellowship at the Kansas City Veterans Health Administration, she worked as a behavioral health consultant at the Kansas City Care Clinic.

King has taught courses for the Counseling Psychology Department at UMKC and has provided clinical supervision for students. She has presented on and published articles and chapters on topics related to diversity in secondary and higher education and social media. King sees clients part-time in private practice and currently serves on the boards for Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City and Central City Economic Development. She is a member of the Kansas City Urban Neighborhood Initiative.
