Bike Patrol

The University of Missouri-Kansas City Police Department Community Policing team bicycle patrol was started during the summer of 1995 with the purchase of two Trek 1000 mountain bikes. That summer, three police officers and a sergeant attended bicycle training at the University of Kansas Police Department. After witnessing how well bike patrol was accepted on campus, more officers have attended bicycle patrol training and we currently have six certified bike patrol officers.

Bike patrol officers complete approximately 20 hours of training that includes how to handle a variety of situations from apprehending suspects to riding in busy parking lots and on crowded sidewalks. They also receive training in bicycle maintenance and nomenclature.

Having a bicycle patrol enables the Police Department to patrol areas of our campus that cannot be reached by car as well as making our patrol officers more accessible to students and employees. Our bicycle officers can take reports, attempt to open locked vehicles, open buildings and answer any questions you may have about the bicycle patrol, Police Department or campus.
