Construction Update

The front entrance with parking at the UMKC Administrative Center is closed for construction. Please use the entrances on the east, south and north ends of building. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships will remain open for calls and email. UMKC Central will be relocating to its new office in Atterbury Student Success Center from July 27 to August 14. Walk-in services may be limited or not available during that time.

Missouri Returning Heroes Award

Award Overview

  • Academic year amount
    • $50 per credit hour tuition waiver
  • About
    • The Missouri Returning Heroes’ Education Act expands education benefits available to service members and veterans with active duty military service on or after Sept. 11, 2001.
    • MRHA limits tuition and fees charged to combat veterans to $50 per credit hour, for any program leading to a certificate or bachelor’s degree.
    • Students who are receiving an automatic scholarship and are also eligible for the Missouri Returning Heroes Award may see a reduction in their automatic award eligibility. Both awards are processed for tuition only, and as a result the automatic award would be reduced to match the tuition being charged. If for any reason the veteran becomes ineligible for the MRHA, they will still have eligibility for the automatic award as long as they are still meeting the renewal requirements.
    • The tuition waiver amount may be adjusted to match a students enrollment costs.
  • Eligibility
    • Served in a Department of Defense-designated armed combat zone between Sept. 11, 2001, and present
    • Missouri resident when first entered the military
    • Honorably discharged
    • Members of the reserves or National Guard if they served in an armed combat zone under a call of active service and in a full-time capacity for more than 30 consecutive days.
  • Renewal requirements
    • 2.50 cumulative university GPA
  • How to apply
    • Provide the Registration and Records Office with a copy of your DD-214 or a copy of your orders into a combat zone.
    • Once verified as eligible, we will determine the amount of the waiver.
    • The waiver is processed between the first and third week of each semester.
    • Veterans are not required to complete the FAFSA or apply for GI Bill benefits.
