Counselors and Admins

Counselors and Admins

High school counselors and admins connect the high school to UMKC. They promote HSCP dual credit opportunities to students, collect teacher credentials, determine student eligibility and assist in the enrollment process.

Everything below happens in myHSCP. Before the year starts, make sure you and anyone else who verifies student GPA has an account. District administrators can request access covering more than one building.

Check who is eligible

Students need your school's approval first. Sophomores, juniors and seniors qualify with a 3.0 cumulative unweighted GPA or a 21 composite ACT. A student with a 2.6 to 2.99 GPA can enroll by exception with a letter of recommendation. Freshmen need a 3.0 GPA or a 90th percentile ACT or SAT, plus a letter from the principal or counselor.

Check the catalog for prerequisites before approving a student.

What families should know

Dual credit is college enrollment, and the record is permanent. Final grades appear on the high school transcript and the UMKC record, count toward a UMKC GPA, and cannot be removed later.

Get a teacher approved

HSCP Instructors must have a Master's degree. For the course they will teach, they need to be qualified in that content area, and to meet that: their Master's is in that field, or they hold at least 18 graduate-level credit hours in it, or the UMKC faculty coordinator approves them on their credentials, as outlined by the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development.

What your school can claim

Classroom supplies. Up to $250 per course, per semester for supplies and instructional resources. Purchase approved items through your school and send the invoice to the HSCP Office.

Textbooks. Reimbursable through the HSCP office, and students are never charged. If an approved instructor leaves and no replacement has been sought, unused books return to the HSCP office.
