UMKC Faculty

Faculty Coordinators

Faculty coordinators are appointed by department chairs for each academic area. Faculty coordinators make a dual credit section equivalent to the campus course — approving the instructor, reviewing the syllabus, visiting the classroom and signing off on assessment.

Approving instructors

Approval rests on credentials plus your department's recommendation. Every instructor holds a Master's degree; content qualification for the specific course is met by a Master's in the field, at least 18 graduate-level credit hours in it, or your approval on their credentials.

DCI instructors have met all content qualifications and enter final grades in Pathway themselves.

CTF instructors are still qualifying — you remain teacher of record and assign final grades, while they provide daily classroom support.

Every new instructor completes New Instructor Orientation and FERPA training before teaching.

Syllabus and course equivalence

Review each instructor's syllabus every year before the course starts, in Simple Syllabus format. Raise concerns before approving; the instructor then uploads it to myHSCP.

Equivalence covers assessment, not just content. Dual credit students take the same summative measures as the campus section. If a research paper is required on campus it is required in the high school section; if students cannot retake a test on campus, they cannot retake one in the classroom.

Every syllabus carries the course equivalency statement, communicated verbally to students as well.

Site visits

Every assigned instructor gets a visit, in person or virtual. New instructors in their first semester teaching, returning instructors on a rotating basis. Visit more often where extra support is needed.

Fall visits run September to November, report due December 1. Spring visits run February to April, report due May 1.

Grading and assessment

For CTF instructors you grade the common assessment and enter grades in Pathway. For DCI instructors you collaborate on common assessment grading as needed. Ask instructors for three to five samples of representative student work — those samples are what document equivalence at accreditation.

Professional development

Complete annual PD covering administrative responsibilities and collaboration with your instructors — about three hours, two of them together. Accreditation requires documented contact: check in quarterly, keep a communication log, and attend the HSCP Office meeting each semester. Instructors count as adjunct faculty, so include them in departmental events and seminars.
