Silverstein joined UMKC in 2008, serving in a variety of academic and research roles before becoming a teaching associate professor in the Division of Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2023. His scholarly work focused on inflammation and drug delivery, and his commitment to advancing scientific understanding was matched by his dedication to student learning.
Teaching was central to Silverstein’s work at UMKC. He was known for his enthusiasm in the classroom and for using creative approaches to help students engage with complex material. Whether lecturing, stepping in to support a colleague or contributing to committees, he brought a collaborative spirit to everything he did.
Gerald Wyckoff, director of research administration and chair and professor of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences in the School of Pharmacy, reflected on Silverstein’s lasting impact in an email.
“I will always remember Dr. Silverstein as both a colleague and a friend,” Wyckoff said. “He was the kind of person who never hesitated to lend a hand, whether it was stepping into a class, sharing ideas for an experiment or contributing on a committee. Pete’s legacy will be his passion for teaching.”
Wyckoff emphasized that Silverstein’s love for education extended beyond lectures, noting his commitment to student engagement and his generous spirit.
“He loved engaging with students, whether through lectures or creative teaching tools that helped them learn and apply knowledge,” Wyckoff said. “His enthusiasm for education was matched only by his gentle kindness, which he shared generously with colleagues, staff and students alike.”
Silverstein’s legacy lives on through the many students he inspired, the colleagues he supported and the programs he strengthened during his time at UMKC.
