On August 18, the School of Dentistry welcomed the children of our staff, faculty, and students for a fun-filled Take Your Kid to Work Day!

To start the morning, each child received a “dental school passport” to take along as they explored the building with their family.

Multiple stations were set up in the school to bring dentistry to life. The first was the anatomy lab station, where families could examine and learn about a variety of anatomical models.

From there, families moved to the simulation lab for the impression station, donning blue PPE (personal protective equipment) gowns and protective eyewear to take impressions and make stone models of teeth.

At the oral hygiene education presentation, children had the chance to interact directly with our dental hygiene students, asking questions and learning firsthand!

The dental photo station allowed children to step into the role of dental professionals with a few friendly “patients.” They dressed in white lab coats, brushed their patients’ teeth, and conducted exams.

After families visited each station, it was time for lunch, games, and a sweet treat from the Kona Ice Truck.

Event organizer Dr. Makini King, Assistant Dean of Engagement and Wellbeing, reflected on the day. “I just started three years ago, so I wasn’t around when it was an annual event in the past,” she shared. “People said that it was a good time, so it was exciting to see that in real life. The kids all seemed to have a blast, and the faculty, staff and student volunteers, planning committee, and participants all helped make the day great.”
