Employment
We've Changed Our Name
We've changed our name from the International Student Affairs Office to International Student and Scholar Services. We're still providing the same level of services and support to our community of international students and scholars.On-Campus Employment
International students on F-1 and J-1 visas are permitted to work on campus without separate work authorization. The following are the basic rules for on-campus employment:
Work Hour Limits
- Fall and Spring semesters: Up to 20 hours per week
- Summer and Winter breaks: Up to 29 hours per week (per UMKC HR policy)
- Students must be maintaining their visa status requirements, including full-time enrollment, in-person attendance, and residence within the Kansas City metropolitan area, as applicable.
- Students may work on campus during Summer and Winter breaks without being enrolled, except for students beginning or ending their program in the Summer term.
- Students are not permitted to work on campus after the last day of finals week in their graduating semester.
Off-Campus Employment
Holders of F-1 and J-1 visas may work off-campus if they have verifiable, legal permission for employment. You may apply for employment permission after you have completed one full academic year of study in your degree field (not including English as a Second Language).
I-9 Form
Stating incorrect information on your I-9 is considered fraud and could result in the denial of benefits or change of status. If you are unsure about how to answer a question, consult your employer's human resources (HR) office for clarification.
