Web Hosting

Schools and departments receive one free shared web server. Storage is limited to 200 GB.

Shared web hosting for individuals and other groups is free up to 10 GB.

Additional web hosting services are available via our Virtual Server Hosting service for a fee.

All shared web servers run on Microsoft IIS or WordPress on Linux. We don’t throttle resources (CPU, bandwidth), but we do monitor to ensure that our shared servers are performing optimally. If a site is found to adversely affect other sites, we will require it be moved to a dedicated virtual server.

Personal Web Site

To access your web files, we recommend you use FileZilla FTP client. You can also edit your site from a network drive share.

Your personal web site URL is dependent upon your UMKC username, using this format:

http://<first letter of username>.web.umkc.edu/<full username>

For example, if your username is xyz123, your website URL willl be:

http://x.web.umkc.edu/xyz123

When configuring FTP, the host server name will be: <first letter>.web.umkc.edu

Example: z.web.umkc.edu

To access your site, do the following:
    • Open FileZilla and fill in the Host: ftps://<first letter>.web.umkc.edu.
    • Next, fill in your UMKC username information for the username and password.
    • Then click on the Quickconnect.

Other access methods:

  • Network drive access: N:\web\<first letter>\<full username>
