Login and Passwords

How do I log into Outlook Live for the first time?
To activate and log into your Outlook Live account for the first time, go to http://www.umkc.edu/is/webmail/newStudents.asp and follow the steps. Make sure to change your password after you are logged into the Outlook Live system.

Is my Outlook Live password the same as the password I use for Pathway?
No. While the User ID and password you use to access Pathway will get you in to most services at UMKC (Blackboard, Remote Labs, wireless access, etc.) the Outlook Live system is separate and requires a different set of login credentials. You can get your Windows Live ID (your Outlook Live username) and a cryptic password used to access the Outlook Live system by going to http://www.umkc.edu/is/webmail/newStudents.asp and following the steps.

Keep in mind that the password you use to access Pathway and other UMKC services will expire every 6 months and require you set another one, while your Outlook Live password will not expire. Therefore, it is not recommended that you set them to the same thing, as they will eventually become unsynchronized.

If you do not know the User ID or password you use to access Pathway, please contact the UMKC Call Center at 816.235.2000 during our business hours.

How do I change my Outlook Live password?
If you do not know your Outlook Live password, go to http://www.umkc.edu/is/webmail/newStudents.asp and follow the steps. You'll be shown your Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account and a cryptic password you can use to access your Outlook Live account. Once you have logged into your Outlook Live account with the cryptic password, follow these steps to change your password to one you can easily remember:

1. In the upper right-hand corner of your e-mail screen just below your name, click on Options, then See All Options...

2. In the right-hand sidebar, click on Change your password (about halfway down the list)

3. Under the Account information section, locate "Password:******" and click the word Change to the right

4. Enter your old password (if this is the first time you've change your Outlook Live password, this will be the cryptic password used to log into your account) and enter a new password into the boxes, then click Save

Keep in mind that the password you use to access Pathway and other UMKC services will expire every 6 months and require you set another one, while your Outlook Live password will not expire. Therefore, it is not recommended that you set them to the same thing, as they will eventually become unsynchronized.

How do I add an alternate email address for password recovery?
If you ever forget your Outlook Live password, you can have a temporary one sent to an alternate email address if you set up the option in Outlook Live. To do this, follow these steps:

1. In the upper right-hand corner of your e-mail screen just below your name, click on Options, then See All Options...

2. In the right-hand sidebar, click on Change your password (about halfway down the list)

3. Under the Password and security info section, click Edit security info.
4. Under the Alternate email address section, click Add.
5. Enter a non-UMKC email address in the box, then click Next.
6. Microsoft will send a code to the alternate email address you entered. Retrieve the code from your alternate email account and enter it into the box provided.

What if I forget my Outlook Live password?
If you forget your Outlook Live password, and have set up either an alternate email address or a secret question and answer pair from within Outlook Live, you can use the Forgot your password link off of the Outlook Live sign-in page at http://www.mail.umkc.edu. If you didn't set up either of those options, you can contact the UMKC IS Call Center with your Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account and UMKC Student ID number and we can reset the password for you.

Why can't I get logged into Outlook Live?
There a couple of reasons why you may not be able to get logged into the Outlook Live system.

First, make sure you are logging in with the Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account and either the cryptic password you received when you activated your Outlook Live account, or the password you set in Outlook Live - not the User ID and password you use for Pathway.

Second, if you were previously a student at another University of Missouri school (Columbia, UMSL, MST), or you applied to and were admitted to another University of Missouri school prior to being admitted to UMKC, your Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account was assigned by that school rather than UMKC and you will need to contact the UMKC IS Technology Support Center so we can move your account from that campus to UMKC.

Addresses and Mailbox

What is my Outlook Live email address?
Your UMKC Outlook Live email address is your User ID followed by @mail.umkc.edu. This is also your Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account, used to log into the Outlook Live system.

Can I create a friendly email alias to use with Outlook Live?
Yes, however there are a few caveats. Eligibility is limited to non-FERPA asserting students only. If you are an employee of the University system, you may or may not be eligible for a personalized email alias, depending on your Human Resources job classification. New UMKC students can't set up personalized aliases until after registering in classes and making an initial payment.

You cannot make up an email alias from scratch - a list of eligible aliases will be generated for you based on your name. If your name is John Edward Doe, you might be able to select from the following:
JohnDoe@mail.umkc.edu
JohnEdwardDoe@mail.umkc.edu
John.E.Doe@mail.umkc.edu
...and potentially more options

To set up your friendly, personalized alias, follow these steps:

1. Click here to begin the process - log in with the User ID and password you use for Pathway
2. The web page should display your name at the top - click the Find Eligible Addresses button
3. Click on the email address you like best and choose personalize my mailbox (note: you may only choose ONE personalized email address)
4. Click OK to confirm

Remember...
Setting a personalized alias does not change your Windows Live ID/Microsoft Account - you will still use your non-personalized email address to log into your email.

You will still receive mail sent to your non-personalized email address after you set up a personalized alias.

Setting up a personalized email alias will not affect your Outlook Live password.

If, when you attempt to create a personalized alias, you get the message, "Sorry! You are not an eligible student," you are most likely registered as a FERPA Asserting student with the Registrar's Office, or as a non-student employee type with Human Resources. You will need to work with those offices if you believe those settings are in error.

What is my mailbox quota on Outlook Live?
Your get 10GB of mailbox quota with Outlook Live. See Microsoft's Message, Mailbox, and Recipient Limits Web page at http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/dd630704.aspx for additional details.

Can I forward my Outlook Live email to another email address?
Yes, although once it leaves the UMKC Outlook Live system, we can't assist with message delivery issues should they arise.

To forward your Outlook Live mail to another email address, log into Outlook Live and follow these steps:

1. In the upper right-hand corner of your e-mail screen just below your name, click on Options, then Create an Inbox Rule...

2. On the Inbox Rules page, click the little arrow next to New...

2. Click Create a new rule for arriving messages...

3. In the selection box under "*When this message arrives, and:" select [Apply to all messages]. In the selection box under "Do the following:" select Redirect the message to...

4. On the window that opens, locate the "To ->" field at the bottom of the window and type in the email address where you want to forward your mail, then click the OK button to the right of the field.

5. Click Save, then Yes.

Will I get to keep my Outlook Live account after I graduate?
Yes, your Outlook Live account will continue to work after your graduate.

Do UMKC faculty or staff use Outlook Live? Do campus organizations use Outlook Live?
Faculty and staff use UMKC's Exchange email system. Email accounts for campus organizations are also on the Exchange system. However, communication between users of Outlook Live and Exchange is seamless. The Global Address Book is shared, so users of each system can find each other, regardless of what email system is being used.

Are any sending or recipient size limits applied to email messages? What are the retention limits for email?
Yes. Detailed listings are given on Microsoft's Message, Mailbox, and Recipient Limits Web page at http://help.outlook.com/en-us/140/dd630704.aspx. The table below has some specific limits:

MESSAGE LIMITS VALUE
Message size limit The maximum total size of an email message. The total size includes the message header, the message body and any file attachments. 25 MB
File attachment size limit The maximum allowed size of a single file attachment in an email message. The message may contain many attachments that greatly increase the overall size of the message. However, the attachment size limit only applies to the size of an individual attachment. 18 MB
File attachments limit The maximum number of file attachments allowed in an email message. Even if the total size of all the file attachments doesn't violate the message size limit, there is still a limit on how many attachments are allowed in a message. 125 attachments
Subject length limit The maximum number of text characters allowed in the subject line of an email message. 255 characters
RECIPIENT LIMITS VALUE
Recipient limit The maximum number of message recipients allowed in the To:, Cc: and Bcc: fields. A public group is counted as a single recipient. 100 recipients
RETENTION LIMITS VALUE
Deleted Items folder retention period The maximum number of days that items can remain in the Deleted Items folder before they are automatically removed. 30 days
Retention period for items removed from the Deleted Items folder The maximum number of days that items removed from the Deleted Items folder are retained before they are permanently deleted. 14 days
Junk Email folder retention period The maximum number of days that items can remain in the Junk Email folder before they are automatically removed. 30 days

Email Access

What are the POP, IMAP and SMTP settings for Outlook Live?
POP, IMAP and SMTP settings will vary depending on the Outlook Live server where Microsoft chooses to store your account. To find the specific settings for your mailbox, log into your Outlook Live account and follow these steps:

1. Locate the help icon (small circle with a question mark in the center) in the upper right-hand corner of your mail screen, just below your name. Click the small triangle to the right of the help icon.

2. Click About.

3. Your mailbox settings will be displayed in a new window. Look for a section about halfway down the page that resembles this:

Remember - the settings above may be different for your mailbox. Make sure to follow the steps to find your specific mailbox settings.

Troubleshooting

I don't see all of the options I expect to see in Outlook Live - why?
There are a couple of reasons you might not see all of the options available in Outlook Live.

First, you may have your Outlook Live settings configured to use the blind and low vision experience, which results in fewer features. To check if this is the case, log into Outlook Live and follow these steps:

1. In the upper right-hand corner of your e-mail screen, click on Options
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility
3. Make sure Use blind and low vision experience is unchecked
4. Click Save, in the top-left portion of the screen

Second, you may be running into a browser compatibility issue. Outlook Live has full functionality in Internet Explorer 7 and higher. Windows users will also see all options in Firefox. However, Macintosh users and users of root-kit browsers (Chrome, Safari, etc.) may not see all available options.

One suggestion for Macintosh users is to use the Remote Labs system to connect to a virtual Windows lab computer, then to use Internet Explorer to access Outlook Live from that environment.

Why am I being taken straight to my personal Hotmail account instead of being prompted to log into my UMKC Outlook Live account?
If you are already logged into an application using another Microsoft account, such as a personal Hotmail account or Windows Live Messenger, you may be taken straight to your personal Hotmail mailbox when you attempt to log into the UMKC Outlook Live system. In this case, you will need to sign out of your current Hotmail session by clicking the "sign out" link in the upper right-hand corner of the window.

If you aren't sure if you are logged into your personal Hotmail account or your UMKC Outlook Live account, make sure your name, followed by "(UMKC-Student)" is displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the window.

Why do I get the error, "Sign-in is blocked" when I try to log into my Outlook Live account?
If you enter an incorrect password into the Outlook Live system 10 times in quick succession, your Outlook Live access will be locked by Microsoft. The result is that you will see the message "Sign-in is blocked" when you try to log into the Outlook Live system. If this occurs, do not attempt to log in again. Contact the IS Technology Support Center and we will work directly with Microsoft to unlock you account. We will then notify you when you can attempt to log in again.
