Math Placement Tests

UMKC uses three MyMath placement tests.

1. Intermediate Algebra
2. College Algebra
3. Pre-Calculus

Do You Need a Placement Test?

You only need to take a placement test if you do not already meet the prerequisite for the math course you plan to take.

Use the guide below to check whether you already satisfy a prerequisite. If unsure, talk to your advisor.

• If you meet a prerequisite, you do not need a placement test for that course.
• If you do not, you will need to take the placement test listed below.

Required placement test and prerequisites:

Students must fulfill one of these requirements before enrolling in their desired course.

MATH 110 (Precalculus Algebra) with MATH 109 (Precalculus Algebra Fundamentals)

• Score of 50% or higher on the Intermediate Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• ACT Math Sub-score of 18 or higher,
• SAT Math Sub-score of 500 or higher

MATH 110 Precalculus Algebra

• Score of 70% or higher on the Intermediate Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• ACT Math Sub-score of 22 or higher, OR
• SAT Math Sub-score of 540 or higher, OR
• Completion of three or more units of high school Algebra I and higher mathematics courses and a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher. (However, Math placement testing is strongly recommended to ensure proper placement in a first college-level math course and support first-year academic success.)

MATH 120 Precalculus

• B- or higher grade in Math 100, OR
• Score of 60% or higher on the College Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• ACT Math Sub-score of 24 or higher, OR
• SAT Math Sub-score of 580 or higher

MATH 125 Trigonometry

• C- or higher grade in Math 110, OR
• Score of 70% or higher on the College Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• ACT Math Sub-score of 28 or higher, OR
• SAT Math Sub-score of 660 or higher

MATH 206 Brief Calculus and Matrix Algebra

• C- or higher grade in Math 110, OR
• Score of 70%  or higher on the College Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• Math 120 or higher with a grade of C- or higher

MATH 210 Calculus I

• C- or higher grade in Math 120, OR
• C- or higher grades in Math 110 & Math 125, OR
• Score of 70% or higher on the Precalculus MyMath Test

MATH 266 Engineering Calculus I

• C- or higher grade in Math 120, OR
• C- or higher grades in Math 110 & Math 125, OR
• Score of 70% or higher on the Precalculus MyMath Test

STAT 235 Elementary Statistics

• C- or higher grade in Math 110, OR
• Score of 70% or higher on the College Algebra MyMath Test, OR
• Math 120 or higher with a grade of C- or higher

About the tests

• The tests are free of charge, and you can retake a test 2 times— the questions are different each time. The best way to improve your results is to use the free training modules available on Canvas.
• The math placement tests are available year-round, except possibly for short periods in late January to early February and late August to early September.
• Please take the required math placement tests at least 24 hours before enrolling in your desired courses. Your score is valid for 11 months from the time you took the test.
