UMKC professor’s book tracks art ‘grotesques’ over the ages

Say “grotesque” and most people think of something that is odd, ugly or deformed. But in the context of art history, the grotesque is not so simple. In her new book, “The Grotesque in Western Art and Culture: The Image at Play,” author Frances Connelly posits the grotesque as a robust but under-recognized presence in art history that rocks the status quo and reveals new cultural possibilities.
