Your Next Steps

1. Meet with your Academic Advisor

You must meet with your Academic Advisor to enroll in classes before attending Spring Orientation. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with your Academic Advisor at your earliest convenience. Contact information is available on the advising website.

2. Register for Orientation

The 2019 Spring Orientation will take place on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 from 11:15am-5:00pm. Registration is now open!

Spring Orientation 2019 will take place in the Student Union. Spring Orientation is highly encouraged for incoming first-time college/freshmen students and transfer students; however, it is not mandatory. During the program, you will:

  • Learn about important deadlines for billing, financial aid, and scholarships.
  • Tour campus with other incoming UMKC students.
  • Find out how to get involved, stay safe, and be healthy at UMKC.

We encourage your family to attend Orientation. Your parents, family members, and/or significant others can learn how to help you transition to life at UMKC.

3. Set yourself up for success

Prepare for your Spring semester by completing action items on our Orientation Checklist (available Fall 2018). This checklist includes tasks such as setting up your Username/Single Sign On (SSO) and password, activating your UMKC email, completing financial documents such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and preparing for your academic advising session.

We highly recommend meeting with your academic advisor on or before Tuesday, January 8, 2019 to ensure the best advising and enrollment session possible. To help get organized for this meeting and to look at other tasks to complete before attending Orientation, we encourage you to complete the items on the Quick Guide.

Who should attend Orientation?

Attendance at Spring Orientation is not mandatory for incoming first-time college/freshmen or transfer students; however, it is strongly recommended. Students who attend Orientation feel more confident about starting their UMKC experience. The first day of classes is less stressful, and students know where to get answers to their questions. Family members and significant others also are welcome to attend Orientation. There is a limit of 2 guests maximum per registered Spring Orientation student.

Where is Orientation?

The Spring Orientation program typically takes place in the Student Union (5100 Cherry St.) on the UMKC Volker Campus. Park on the fifth level of the Cherry Street Parking Garage (5005 Oak St.) and follow the pedestrian walkway from the garage to the Student Union.

How much does Orientation cost?

The Spring 2019 Orientation registration fee is $10 for students, and free for their families and guests. There is a limit of 2 guests maximum per Spring Orientation student registration.

The Office of Admissions will bill this fee to your UMKC student account after Orientation. Due to federal regulations, Orientation guest registration fees cannot be paid with federal financial aid and/or scholarships. Please check your UMKC student account to be sure you meet all payment deadlines (if applicable). All Orientation fees are nonrefundable. UMKC will issue no refunds if you cancel your registration, do not attend UMKC, and/or reduce your guest count.

Do I need to pay for parking?

Parking passes are free and required for all weekday UMKC Orientation programs. Once registered for Spring 2019 Orientation, more information will be sent to your student email with parking details, including where to park and how to submit a request to receive a one-day guest permit. Orientation participants will be required to print and bring this permit with them on the day of the Orientation program, displaying the permit on their vehicle front dashboard. Please do not park in designated parking spots unless you have proper parking identification. At this time, only one UMKC guest parking permit will be issued per Orientation student registrant.

What should I wear?

Dress casually and appropriately for the winter Missouri weather. Many activities involve moving around campus, so comfortable shoes and outdoor clothing are highly recommended. Feel free to wear your favorite UMKC gear, or purchase it at the UMKC Bookstore during your Orientation session!

I would like to stay overnight in Kansas City. What are my options?

View a list of hotels in the area. When making your reservation, ask if the hotel has a special rate for UMKC guests.

Will a meal be provided at Orientation?

Lunch will be provided during Spring Orientation. More information about lunch options will be featured on the Spring Orientation registration website.

When is the first day of class?

The first day of class for Spring 2019 is Tuesday, January 22, 2019. The first day of classes is important, but that's only one day to talk about--there are so many more!

UMKC has many ways for you to get involved and connected when the semester begins. To learn more about the events, clubs, and organizations that can help you feel a part of the UMKC community, check out the Office of Student Involvement as well as our UMKC Academic Calendar.
