Are UMKC Police Officers real police?

Yes, we are. All UMKC Police Officers attend a state certified Class A Police Academy in accordance with the MO Peace Officer Standards and Training program. All UMKC Police Officers are Commissioned by the University of Missouri Board of Curators. We are fully certified, sworn law enforcement officers with the same authority to maintain order, preserve peace and make arrests as is now held by peace officers.

What is the jurisdiction of the campus police?

 University police officers protect persons, property and preserve peace and good order in the public buildings, properties, grounds and other facilities and locations over which it has charge or control.

Can a UMKC officer write me a ticket or arrest me?

Yes, they can. Being state certified officers, we can write tickets and also have the powers of arrest according to the Missouri Statutes.

What number should you call if there were an emergency on campus?

To be connected with the UMKC Police, dial 816-235-1515, or 9-1-1 from any campus phone.

Are the emergency phones on campus direct dial to the UMKC Police?

Yes, they are. Well-marked emergency or "blue light" phones are located throughout the campus grounds and parking lots which will connect directly with the UMKC Police dispatcher.

What is the number one crime on campus?

By far the most common crime that occurs on campus is simple theft. You can avoid being a statistic in this category by simple common sense. Do NOT leave your possessions unattended at any time. Do NOT leave anything of value visible in your car. Lock your residence, vehicle, or office any time you leave no matter how short the absence will be.

Where is the UMKC Police Department located and when is it open?

The UMKC Police Department is located at 5005 Oak St., in the bottom level of the Cherry St. Parking Structure. The Police Department is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Is the Police Department hiring new officers?

UMKC Police actively recruits people to become part of our department. Applications may be filled out online or at the Human Resources located in the Administrative Center, room 226, 5115 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO 64112, 816-235-1621.

Does the Police Department fingerprint for applications, licenses, and other personal reasons?

Yes. Fingerprinting service is available to UMKC students, faculty and staff at UMKC Police Headquarters, 5005 Oak St. These are ink prints, not digital. The non-refundable charge is $20 per fingerprint card. We accept exact change cash only. No check or charge.
