In coordination with academic deans, directors and faculty, the Office of the Provost is responsible for advancing the University's mission through the administration of academic programs, including instruction and research and the management of academic administrative and support services. The provost serves as the chief academic officer and senior member of the chancellor's leadership team and is responsible for implementing the University's vision. The provost also ensures academic excellence; maintains growth in external funding for research and outreach; and supports synergy among schools, academic departments, centers, institutes and professional programs. Through collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management and faculty colleagues, the provost is also working to expand student retention and success strategies and the development of an early alert program.

The Deputy Provost for Academic Affairs oversees faculty development, undergraduate research, student assessment and academic program review, as well as reviewing all undergraduate course and academic program proposals/modifications. Her role also involves supporting projects and initiatives implemented by the Provost and the UM System as needed, including the University’s Strategic Plan.

Information Services is responsible for supporting the academic, research and service missions of the university. UMKC IS provides campus technology support for hardware, software, server and desktop support, call center support, web-based academic and administrative systems. The Information Services community also provides Information Technology security, networking, programming, application development, classroom AV services, an enterprise data center, phone and internet services and project management.

The Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness directs the operations for the Office of Planning, Analysis, and Decision Support including but not limited to developing, implementing, and managing data resources as well as providing planning, assessment, and reporting on all levels. The Vice Provost of Institutional Effectiveness leads the planning, collection, and analyses of data to assess and monitor the institution's effectiveness in achieving its mission, goals, and strategic priorities. In addition, the Vice Provost for Institutional Effectiveness oversees programs for strategic planning, institutional research, data warehouse, accreditation studies, program review, evaluation of centers and institutions, assessment of student learning, record keeping, institutional accountability, and academic quality assurance.

The Vice Provost and Executive Director of the UMKC Innovation Center assists emerging and existing business owners, whether they are student, faculty or community based, by providing assistance to hone their business basics, evaluate commercialization opportunities, and connect with the right resources at the right time. Specializing in technology commercialization, the Innovation Center delivers just-in-time education, counseling and access to resources to aspiring and existing business owners resulting in increased jobs for the community it serves.

The Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development oversees the Office of Research Services (ORS), the Institute for Human Development (IHD), and the UMKC Innovation Center encompassing all of the research and economic development initiatives at UMKC. The IHD conducts and collaborates on a wide variety of Applied Research projects to develop, implement, and evaluate new ideas and promising practices for improved delivery of support services. The Innovation Center partners with the university and the community to spark entrepreneurial efforts that translate research discoveries and innovations into profitable, job-creating businesses. The Vice Chancellor's Office also provides assistance to faculty and staff to improve grant and contract award success. These support services include award packet development, pre-award budget help, application assembly, electronic submission and post award management. The ORS is responsible for the management of all research grants and awards consistent with the university policy, those of funding agencies, and federal regulations. In addition, the Office manages compliance with federal, state, and local and institutional regulatory practices; and oversees the Office of Technology Transfer to help UMKC researchers share their discoveries with the world.

Associate Vice Provost for University College and Undergraduate Advising

The Associate Vice Provost for the University College and Undergraduate Advising facilitates efforts towards the development and implementation of programs and services that support students' ability to purposefully craft educational plans based on an assessment of their values, abilities, aspirations, and career goals. The role involves leading cross-college initiatives and programs in collaboration with academic college/schools and working closely with Student Affairs to ensure that academic advising is closely coordinated with other support services. The Associate Vice Provost is directly responsible for UMKC's University College, the unit that coordinates the overall academic experience of incoming exploratory (undecided/undeclared) students and continuing students in transition between majors.

The Director of Assessment provides leadership in the area of assessment of student learning outcomes assessment. The Director of Assessment chairs the University Assessment Committee, which is charged with coordinating and facilitating the work of the university in the areas of assessment for student learning and assessment for accountability. The role involves assessment policy development, implementation, and review; collaboration with faculty and staff on unit and institutional assessment plan development and implementation; and preparation of internal and external reports related to assessment.

The Vice Provost of Online and Distance Learning works to develop quality online education experiences at UMKC, and assists faculty and staff in matters of developing, improving, and implementing online courses. This includes working with an advisory committee to develop and articulate a plan for e-learning at UMKC, assisting with development of new online degree programs, and providing support to those programs that are currently providing online education experiences for their students.
