Faculty Learning Communities and Faculty Writing Initiative

Faculty Affairs is headed into the new year and the new decade with two new programs: Faculty Writing Initiative and Faculty Learning Communities. RooSTRONG funding supports both programs because faculty success, whether in the classroom or with scholarship, is foundational to student success.

Affordable and Open Educational Resources

The UM System Affordable & Open Educational Resources (A&OER) initiative works to enhance the use of affordable and open educational resources at the university.  A&OER provide students immediate and unlimited access to course materials, enhance learning by providing up-to-date and interactive resources, and lead to greater retention and graduation.  Additionally, they help to lower the cost of education. UMKC is committed to this very important initiative.

Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching (FaCET)

The Faculty Center for Excellence in Teaching (FaCET) is faculty defined and operated with a focus on promoting academic excellence by facilitating student-centered pedagogies and practices. The Center sponsors forums for the discussion, assessment, development, and documentation of teaching practices with demonstrated verifiable benefits for students. The Center is a hub for existing UMKC programs that emphasize student learning and it is a gathering place for faculty who are committed to the improvement of their own teaching as well as for faculty who are committed to the scholarship of teaching and learning.

UM System Leadership Development Program

Since 2000, the Leadership Development Program has recognized 30 to 35 academic leaders each year who have demonstrated leadership and leadership potential. The goal of the program, which has recognized 400 leaders across the UM System to date, is to develop leaders who will guide the universities into the future. To participate, faculty members need to submit an application; university provosts and the UM Office of Academic Affairs will select the final cohort.
