Your first semester is an important beginning — we’re here to help you make the most of it. We’ll connect with you with the people and resources you need to succeed and enjoy your time at UMKC and help you start creating a career you'll love.
These are some of the experiences you can look forward to:
You’ll be placed in a meta-major cohort — a grouping of interest areas that have related majors or career paths. Together, you’ll explore your major along with related career branches through guest speakers and small group discussions and experiences. All FSE students will complete a career assessment and participate in events at the career center as part of the program.
The five meta-major areas are Natural and Health Sciences, Human Behavior, Arts and Cultural Studies, Numbers, Engineering, Technology, and the Cosmos, and Business. There is also meta-major cohort for exploratory students who want to learn about a broader range career and major pathways at UMKC.
Outside lecture halls, you’ll be in smaller group conversations with other first-semester students in your meta-major. You will have an upperclass student leader (called a Peer Academic Leader, or PAL) and faculty guide to help you refine your career goals.
You will have learn about and and connect with with essential campus services such as Academic Support and Mentoring, the Division of Diversity and Inclusion, Student Health and Wellness, Equity and Title IX, and Career Services. You will also select from a range of elective experiences that that will help you connect with campus activities and clubs, events hosted by departments throughout the university, and a range of events in the community.
