Note: Topic: Breaking Down Racial Divides … or Reinforcing Them? Race and Ethnicity in the Time of Obama Note: Class meets Saturdays, June 11 and June 18 at the Kansas City Academy, 7933 Main Street, Kansas City, Mo. Course Description: The election of a racial minority for the President of the United States could mean that deeply embedded racial divides in the U.S. have begun to break down. However, recent debates and notable controversies over immigration—as well as an increase in White supremacist groups—could mean that the path to racial harmony is not as smooth as it seems. In this course, we use sociological theories and concepts to examine past and current racial divisions in the U.S., and to explore how the election of President Obama has stirred the race pot once again. Course Description: The recent economic struggles facing millions of Americans is a result of a consumer culture in which credit reigns supreme. Popular culture heavily influences our spending habits as many consumers are looking to movies, television, and print media for the latest trends. In this course, we use sociological theories and concepts to explore why and how consumer debt has exploded in a culture in which the “buy now, pay later” mentality has become the norm.
