Course Description: Smart Grid is the next evolutionary change in the electric system. At times called “holistic engineering” or “SCADA on steroids”, Smart Grid is a process intended to improve on the present electric system by morphing it into an energy system by connecting with all sources of information to force expansion, improvement, automation and reinforcement of the present electric system. This smart grid course studies all electric power system components and draws analogies from communication and networking to suggest improvements in each component to develop a smarter grid. Course Description: “Industrial Engineering Series – Commercial Buildings” Using the IEEE Standard 142 commonly known as the Gray Book we will define practices for the electrical design of commercial buildings. This standard not only delves deep into hundreds of design decisions unknown to many, but it demonstrates the combination of disciplines to produce proactive designs that fulfill present and future intents. We will follow such a path to a level of detail few have encountered to see how physics, math, the standards and electrical theories form the operational structures we call commercial buildings. Our project will be Flarsheim Hall review. Prerequisite: Undergraduates only must have an avowed interest in electrical power engineering and have earned an A- or better in ECE-466. Course Description: Electric Power Laboratory course examines mathematically the laboratory assisted areas of power engineering of present interests to the consulting and manufacturing sectors. Topics covered will include phase shifts, neutral shifts, load imbalances, peaking order, asymmetrical parameters and their limitations, saturation, harmonic distortion, spring mass equivalents of the operating electric system, momentum and inertia and its place in the new renewable electric system, source impedances, Ferranti effects and Ferro resonance. Prerequisites are ECE 476 – Power Systems II, a good understanding of the per-unit and symmetrical component method of analyses or instructor approval. Regular Academic
