Ask Samuel a question.

Why is undergraduate research important to you?
Doing research is an avenue to exercise academic freedom and apply what you spend so much time studying.

How did you first get involved with undergraduate research and/or how did you find your mentor?
I discussed the desire of doing research with my counselor, they suggested I look at the department’s research web page. Reviewing the faculty mentor’s publications and ongoing research helped me find a mentor that I was excited about: Dr. Dobens! Math was something I struggled with, but enjoyed doing. I was blessed to come across Dr. Bani through an EUREKA class. He told me about this Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics Group opportunity; I looked more into it and ended up working with Dr. Li!

How did you determine what your particular research project would be?
I told my mentor about my interests with respect to the research he was doing in his lab. He helped design an experiment. Some mentors will even allow you to work on multiple projects if you maintain your focus on your primary research project.

What have you gained from experience?
I’ve presented my research at multiple symposiums, and even shared my research with Missouri legislators. Throughout my undergrad career, I’ve been a part of independent and team-based research projects that encompass: lifespan longevity, Parkinson’s, visualizing tumor suppressors, and Brain MRI segmentation.
