UMKC Service-Learning/Community Engagement

UMKC is connected and engaged with Kansas City communities through many innovative faculty and student projects. On this page, UMKC Service Learning keeps a running list of courses with a significant community engagement component for three purposes: 1) To help students interested in learning in a community context know where to look for courses. 2) To give visibility to the faculty members who embrace this teaching methodology. 3) To help Kansas City community organizations conceptualize possible ways of connecting with UMKC. Please note this list is neither exhaustive nor exclusive. Some of the courses have utilized UMKC Service-Learning or Serve 2 Learn and others have not.  To bring together the list, faculty members share basic information about their courses with UMKC Service Learning.

Fall Semester 2014

  • CE411 – Civil Engineering Capstone:  We design small civil engineering projects for local government. This course will continue into spring semester (O'Bannon)
  • CJC 488 - Mentoring Juvenile Justice System-Involved Youth. Youth mentoring experience in a juvenile justice setting with required training and classroom study. Students will mentor incarcerated girls weekly and conduct a ten week class within the semester for the girls living at Hilltop (5 hours/week). The community partner is Jackson County Family Court.
  • DENTISTRY 6310C Patient Care I  and Patient Care II 6314C (Rice) Students complete rotations at the Kansas City Regional Center for Developmentally Disabled.
  • DENTISTRY 6315C Patient Care III and 6352 Patient Care IV (Branson and McCunniff) Students complete rotations at the Kansas City Regional Center for Developmentally Disabled.

  • ENV-SCI H110R - Understanding the Earth: Introduction to Environmental Science and Laboratory (Davies)
  • HEALTH SCIENCES 300 - Diversity in Health (Ellis-Claypool) students are completing their service-learning projects with a number of community partners. The outcomes are to define how social, cultural, political and historical influences shape individual values and beliefs, to identify approaches to cultural competency in health, and to develop an awareness of health disparities.
  • HEALTH SCIENCES 230 - Health Issues in Aging (Grimes) students are completing their service-learning projects with a variety organizations that serve an aging population. The outcomes include: provide service, interact, and engage in activities with older adults in order to foster learning about older adults and healthy lifestyles; to be professional, collaborate with community site coordinator, and remain within a student role.
  • HEALTH SCIENCES 494 - Health Science Internship (Ellis Claypool)
  • LAW 8814E - Appellate Practice Clinic (Berman). Students represent appellants before the western district court of appeals in their appeals from denial of unemployment compensation. Students attend training sessions to learn relevant substantive and procedural law of unemployment compensation, and then assist in reviewing files to select cases for appeal and contacting potential clients, review records and transcripts of the selected cases, meet with the clients, research and write the brief and reply briefs, and argue the cases on appeal. Students must be Rule 13 eligible and have completed Appellate Advocacy II.
  • LAW 8815S - Leadership in Disability Studies (Dittmeier, Moran, Petri). Students connect with organizations that provide services to people with disabilities to learn about leadership.
  • LAW 8790 Legal Aid Clinic -- Internship at offices of Legal Aid of Western Missouri. Students receive instruction in basic poverty law representation and techniques for experiential learning and, depending on placement, are given supervised instruction and practice opportunities in client counseling, fact investigation and discovery, case preparation and pleadings, community advocacy and trial techniques. Faculty and Legal Aid attorney supervision. Limited enrollment. Concurrent enrollment in certain courses may be required for some field placements. Ungraded. Pass/fail.
  • LAW 8662 F Family Court Clerkship--Second or third-year students will serve as law clerks to judges and commissioners in the family court of Jackson County. Students work at least 80 hours at the court and attend review conferences over the course of the semester. Pass/Fail.
  • SGS 5501 - Disability and Community Support (Petri) - Students completing service-learning projects with the YMCA's Challenger Program.
  • SOC 390R - Directed Field Experience I - students completing unpaid internships at a variety of nonprofit organizations.
