Before you take advantage of any of the exciting recreational and fitness activities at the Swinney Recreation Center, we strongly urge you to consult your physician regarding your ability and preparedness to participate in the various activities offered. The University assumes that users of the center have verified their health/fitness with their personal physicians and that they assume their own risk in participating.

If interested in participating in a class, please sign up early. UMKC students may charge to their student account (not available for online registration).

Kinesis

A workout that focuses on balance, strength and flexibility. You’ll perform a variety of exercises to target total body conditioning. Kinesis movement training works through all of your body’s planes and ranges of motion. This is a great class if you are looking to vary up your workout regimen.

The Kinesis Center is located on the lower level of Swinney Recreation Center across from the Service Center.

Yoga (all levels)

Connect mind, body and spirit while you tone and shape your body. The focus of our all levels Yoga class is to find balance and promote healing. A toned and well-shaped body is a byproduct of this great class. This class will give the busy yogi everything they need to get in, get mindful and get busy.

Condensing the practice into a powerful one-hour class combines flowing & powerful poses with the alignment you need for a dynamic practice. Work to a soundtrack of mindful breath and contemporary music. Class is open to anyone wishing to go deeper into their practice, build strength, increase concentration or just sweat. All levels are welcome.

Report for duty! Challenge yourself with this high energy class where a total body workout meets cardiovascular and strength training. Exercises include calisthenics, resistance and agility training, core work, and more. Anything goes in boot camp!

Friday Yoga focuses on breathing, mindfulness and stress reduction through the introduction of slow flowing yoga sequences and gentle poses. It is the perfect class for newcomers and seasoned participants who are looking for a balanced, purposeful class to kick off the weekend.

X-Fit

X-Fit focuses on intense workouts in a short time! Feel yourself getting stronger physically and mentally over the seven-week session. We will work on exercises that help build strength to make daily activities more effective and efficient. At the end of each session, you will see a difference in strength, balance and flexibility. Core Strength + H.I.I.T.

By incorporating intense periods of work with short recovery periods, High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.) allows you to push yourself to new limits that will have you burning fat long after you've left the gym. The intense circuits in H.I.I.T. classes stimulate muscle-building hormones such as growth hormone and ICF-1.

In addition to the hormone response, H.I.I.T. also develops the cardiovascular system. While you push your heart rate during periods of work, you will increase your cardiovascular ability and strengthen your heart. The short rest intervals allow you to increase recovery capabilities resulting in faster recoveries in future workout sessions.

Finish each class with a variety of core exercises that will strengthen and support your body from its foundation.

Group Train

Step up your game with Group Train! Group Train takes personal results and makes it affordable for everyone in a group training atmosphere. Build total body strength using weights, body bars, resistance tubing and more to help you burn fat and tone in Group Train class. This class takes place in a smaller setting with no more than 12 people. The instructor has the time needed to help you succeed on an individualized basis.

Kettle Bell Intervals

Extended periods of high-intensity exercises followed by short recovery periods make Kettle Bell Interval training the perfect class for the any fitness participants. By alternating between aerobic and anaerobic exercises, instructors guarantee that musculoskeletal and cardiovascular fitness are constantly challenged and pushed to the next level. The additional kettle bell component will help build muscle and define the muscle you already have. Get the most out of your workout at Kettle Bell Intervals!
