Before you take advantage of any of the exciting recreational and fitness activities at the Swinney Recreation Center, we strongly urge you to consult your physician regarding your ability and preparedness to participate in the various activities offered. The University assumes that users of the center have verified their health/fitness with their personal physicians and that they assume their own risk in participating.

If interested in participating in a class, please sign up early. UMKC students may charge to their student account (not available for online registration).

Swinney Spin*

Say good-bye to excuses! Join us for a 60-minute cardiovascular spin and sweat session that fits easily into the lunch hour.   Diversify the workout by spinning through strength, cardiovascular and endurance intervals to energizing, upbeat music. Enthusiastic instructors will motivate and inspire through effective, low-impact classes each week to help achieve fitness and health goals.

 

*Swinney Spin classes are limited to 18 participants due to the number of available spin bicycles. Bikes will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kinesis

A workout that focuses on balance, strength and flexibility. You’ll perform a variety of exercises to target total body conditioning. Kinesis movement training works through all of your body’s planes and ranges of motion. This is a great class if you are looking to vary up your workout regimen.

The Kinesis Center is located on the lower level of Swinney Recreation Center across from the Service Center.

Yoga (all levels)

Connect mind, body and spirit while you tone and shape your body. The focus of our all levels Yoga class is to find balance and promote healing. A toned and well-shaped body is a byproduct of this great class. This class will give the busy yogi everything they need to get in, get mindful and get busy.

Condensing the practice into a powerful one-hour class combines flowing & powerful poses with the alignment you need for a dynamic practice. Work to a soundtrack of mindful breath and contemporary music. Class is open to anyone wishing to go deeper into their practice, build strength, increase concentration or just sweat. All levels are welcome.

X-Fit focuses on intense workouts in a short time! Feel yourself getting stronger physically and mentally over the seven-week session. Core Strength + H.I.I.T.

By incorporating intense periods of work with short recovery periods, High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T.) allows you to push yourself to new limits that will have you burning fat long after you've left the gym. The intense circuits in H.I.I.T. classes stimulate muscle-building hormones such as growth hormone and ICF-1.

In addition to the hormone response, H.I.I.T. also develops the cardiovascular system. While you push your heart rate during periods of work, you will increase your cardiovascular ability and strengthen your heart. The short rest intervals allow you to increase recovery capabilities resulting in faster recoveries in future workout sessions.

Finish each class with a variety of core exercises that will strengthen and support your body from its foundation.

#swinneyfit Boot Camp

Ready to start your days with an amazing, total body workout? #swinneyfit Boot Camp will have you sweating outdoors on the Recreational Field three mornings per week for three total weeks per session. Push your body to new cardio and strength limits to unleash your inner athlete!

#swinneyfit Boot Camp is special group fitness class that operates outside of the typical 8-week session. There will be four separate 3-week sessions offered during the summer.
All #swinneyfit Boot Camp participants get a t-shirt on the last day of each session.

Tai Chi Master Class

An internal or “soft” martial art form widely practiced for its many health benefits, tai chi is a moving study in meditation that requires the practitioner to maintain an alert yet relaxed body and mind set.

In this class, tai chi training techniques and fundamental skills including postures, hand, and footwork will be introduced and a short, simple Yang Style Tai Chi form will be taught. Wear comfortable clothing and athletic shoes.

Core Strength

Through power, strength and cardiovascular exercises, Core Strength classes will push participants to stabilize, support and define the abdominal region.

This class combines the high calorie burn of cardio exercise with core work to maximize results. Participants can look forward to improving their cardiovascular (aerobic) fitness and toning and strengthening their core: rectus and transverse abdominis, internal and external obliques, multifidus, erector spinae and more.


Core Strength is just what you need to take your aerobic and musculoskeletal training to the next level.

Circuit Training

Circuit Training features stations of cardio and strength training exercises for a total body workout! Circuit training is a program in which you move immediately from an exercise for one muscle group to an exercise for a different muscle group until all major muscle groups have been worked.

The circuit of activities can include free weights, calisthenics exercises, exercise tubing and cardio-respiratory equipment. Moving immediately from one activity to the next allows you to work the cardio-respiratory system as well as the muscular system. Challenge yourself today!

Power & Agility

Looking to push yourself to the next level? Power and Agility classes will do just that! Agility and Strength classes work to improve participants’ motor skills and reaction time as well as build strength in all major muscle groups. Certified trainers motivate participants through high intensity cardiovascular exercises and explosive power moves to help participants excel physically.

Classes use a combination of speed drills, agility ladders, plyometrics, and resistance training to improve total body strength, core stability, speed and cardiovascular health. Bring your inner athlete!

Group Train

Step up your game with Group Train! Group Train takes personal results and makes it affordable for everyone in a group training atmosphere. Build total body strength using weights, body bars, resistance tubing and more to help you burn fat and tone in Group Train class. This class takes place in a smaller setting with no more than 12 people. The instructor has the time needed to help you succeed on an individualized basis.

Kettle Bell Intervals

Extended periods of high-intensity exercises followed by short recovery periods make Kettle Bell Interval training the perfect class for the any fitness participants.
