Getting Involved

College is more than just classrooms! In fact, co-curricular activities help you be more personally engaged in your education, which will help you achieve your academic and professional goals.

Campus Recreation

Swinney Center is home to Campus Recreation and features indoor and outdoor tracks, outdoor recreational field and soccer stadium, five basketball courts, squash and racquetball courts, fitness center, aerobics, fitness classes, 6-lane indoor pool, intramural sports, and an annex at Hospital Hill.  Campus Recreation has all you need to stay on a fun and beneficial exercise routine–individually or as a team.  Check out the intramural sports activities and join a tournament with other students interested in friendly competition!

Office of Student Involvement

The mission of the Office of Student Involvement (OSI) is to actively encourage student development, foster leadership, celebrate diversity, and facilitate co-curricular and community engagement for all students.

OSI is dedicated to supporting the educational mission of the University by enriching students’ college experience outside the classroom.  Through a collaborative, holistic approach it is our goal to enhance the student experience and provide ways for students to engage with each other, creating a vibrant campus community.

OSI sponsors the following activities and organizations:

Multicultural Student Affairs

The mission of the Multicultural Student Affairs Office (MSA) is to enhance and improve the quality of the college experience for students of color.  Furthermore, MSA seeks to collaboratively educate, empower, and engage the campus community on the multicultural experience.  We achieve this through providing leadership to multicultural students organizations to ensure relevant cultural programming is present campus-wide, partnering with various campus constituents to weave the experiences of multicultural students into the fabric of the institution, and serving as an additional support system to the overall growth, development and success of our students.

NCAA Division I Athletics

UMKC is a member of NCAA Division I and offers the following sports teams:  Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Women’s Tennis, Men’s Golf, Women’s Softball, and Women’s Volleyball.

Residential Life

Residential Life provides programming and support to students living in university housing facilities–in fact, students who live with Residential Life on average earn a half grade higher GPA than students who don’t.  Students living in our facilities are in the heart of campus life.

Student Government Association

As the student government of UMKC, SGA represents all students on campus and acts as the student advocate with the administration and faculty. The executive branch has four elected officers: president, executive vice president, administrative vice president and comptroller.  Elections are held every April. The legislative branch, known as the student senate, comprises elected representatives from the academic units that make up UMKC. The judicial branch is vested in UMKC’s Superior Court. Each Academic Unit is governed by a school council that reports to the SGA.

Student Union

Built by students, for students, the Union features 10,000 sq. ft. of space exclusively for student organizations.  The Union also houses the Student Government Senate chambers, Office of Student Involvement, Multicultural Student Affairs, University Bookstore, computer lab, lounge areas, coffee-shop performance stage, retail food court, meeting spaces, roof-top terrace, 329-seat theater, and a 6,300 sq. ft. multi-purpose room.  The facility is LEED Gold Certified and makes innovative use of reclaimed materials, natural lighting, and sustainability initiatives.

Dean of Students Honor Recipients

Graduating students who have excelled in both academic achievement and service to our community may be nominated as a Dean of Students Honor Recipient. This recognition honors students who maintain high scholastic performance while actively participating in University and community activities outside the classroom.
