Register Your Travel

Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

UMKC requires all students studying abroad to register their travel details with the U.S. Department of State's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Enrolling in STEP allows the State Department to contact and support you more effectively in the event of an emergency. One added advantage is that if your passport is lost while you're overseas, the local U.S. embassy or consulate can more quickly help you obtain a replacement. This registration is required for U.S. citizens only — students who are not U.S. citizens should check if their home country offers a similar travel registration program. 

You should also make sure to create multiple copies of your travel documents in case they are stolen. It is recommended that you create a digital copy to keep on your phone, along with a copy that you emailed to yourself.

Travel Risk Advisories

Stay up to date on travel advisories.

If traveling to a country or region under a travel advisory Level 3 or Level 4 from the U.S. Department of State or Centers for Disease Control, you must submit a UMKC High-Risk Travel form (PDF).

Medical and Travel Insurance Coverage

You have the option to enroll in Chubb travel and medical assistance coverage.
