Faculty Guidelines
Student Accommodation Plans
- Students request an accommodation plan by completing an application and submitting documentation of their disability through Roo Access
- When Student Accessibility Services (SAS) receives an application, an access advisor meets with the student to establish an accommodation plan
- Once an accommodation plan is established, students request accommodations for each course every semester through Roo Access
- Roo Access will automatically notify faculty and instructors of requested accommodations through a Faculty Notification Letter (FNL) sent to your UMKC email address
- Accommodations are not retroactive and only apply from the point of notification
Faculty and Instructor Responsibilities
- Review the FNL and implement accommodations in a timely manner
- All disability-related information is confidential and should never be discussed publicly or disclosed to others
- Accommodations cannot fundamentally alter a course. Consult SAS to explore alternatives.
- Upload or revise your testing guidelines for students who are registered with SAS by logging into Roo Access with your UMKC SSO username and password.
- If you need assistance with exams or exam scheduling, please email us or visit Professor Resources for additional resources.
- Course materials may need to be converted to alternative formats, such as digital text or enlarged print. If needed, the Faculty Notification Letter (FNL) will include a description.
- Follow digital accessibility guidelines when sharing digital resources with your students.
Common Classroom Accommodations and Implementation
- Students with specific needs may be approved to use laptops or assistive technology for notetaking and coursework
- Some students may need to step out periodically due to medical needs. Faculty should support discreet breaks with minimal disruption.
- All multimedia content used in courses must include captions. Faculty should work with SAS for assistance.
- Some students may require instructors to wear a microphone transmitter to enhance auditory access.
- SAS has replaced peer notetakers with alternative note-taking technology. The technology is a secure, cloud-based, note-taking application that records audio during classes and generates transcriptions, enabling students to take more effective and personalized notes.
- Sign language interpreters and captioning services: Faculty may need to coordinate seating and visibility for interpreters or enable captioning for online content.
- Service animals (typically dogs) are permitted in classrooms but must be under control of the handler.
- When an animal is in your classroom, you may only ask these two questions: (1) Is the animal a service animal required due to a disability? and (2) What task has the dog been trained to perform?
- Emotional support animals are not allowed in academic spaces but may be approved by SAS to be in university housing.
