Biography

Sam Nelson (he/him/his) is a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology at the University of Missouri–Kansas City (UMKC). He recently received his master’s degree from UMKC in 2021, while pursuing his doctorate. Sam often approaches psychotherapy from behavioral and cognitive perspectives, helping individuals to find insight and make behavioral changes in their daily lives. Sam often emphasizes goal-setting in his work, guiding individuals to focus their efforts in order to create change and symptom remission. He enjoys working with people from all walks of life, and he is committed to increasing his cultural competency to better serve individuals with identities different than his own. Sam particularly enjoys working with patients who are challenged by their experiences of anxiety. Outside of his clinical work, Sam enjoys gardening, recreational sports, yoga, video games, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
