As an advisor I strive to help my students reach their goals by providing resources and support, and pledging to have their continued development as people, students, and as members of the greater community in the forefront of all that I do. It is essential that my students can be their 100% authentic selves around me so that they know they can come to me and feel comfortable being honest. This will help our relationship grow so that we can be some of the best members of the UMKC community. Just like Pip in “Great Expectations,” I am dedicated to the growth of my students and expect much of them and myself to achieve their potential. The growth of our advising relationship comes with important steps that both student and advisor must adhere to. Therefore, we should both be honest, show maturity, be pro-active, and strive for a growth mindset so that we can learn from both failures and successes in turn. As an advisor I will use the best advising practices, such as unconditional positive regard, and pro-active advising to provide resources, guidance, and always advocate for my students and encourage them to always advocate for themselves. This means I will always work hard for the student and do my best to show patience and respect no matter what. With this comes knowing that I make mistakes, but that I am willing to acknowledge them and learn from them. Being an advisor is important to me because I know that helping students is an important job and I take it seriously. I know that helping students reach their goals has a positive impact on the individual and society.
