Advising creates a consistent and equitable experience for every student. Our focus is to deliver exceptional, personalized support that helps students feel confident, cared for, and connected throughout their academic journey.

Welcome to Roo Advising!

First Things First: What is Academic Advising?

Roo Advising is a centralized academic advising model that is divided into Major Academic Pathways (MAPs). Advisors are full-time staff members who are assigned to undergraduate students and work to guide them on their path to graduation.

In addition to advisors, the Roo Advising team includes success coaches, retention specialists, office staff, student workers and management.

The Culture of Care guides our advising practices. Roo Advising is a proactive, personalized and comprehensive advising experience.

Academic advisors support students to achieve their personal and career goals by:

  • Mapping out a plan to graduation
  • Building class schedules
  • Connecting you to campus resources
  • Understanding holds, deadlines and policies
  • Choosing a major or minor
  • Navigating technology

Students are encouraged to meet with their assigned academic advisor each semester to review their enrollment plans.

Make an appointment with your advisor in Connect! You can also call our front desk at 816-235-1148 and we can help you make an appointment.

Students are encouraged to schedule enrollment appointments early in the semester to develop or review their academic plan. Scheduling appointments early will ensure appointment availability and prevent enrollment delays.

Roo Advising also offers drop-in hours, Monday through Thursday. While it is encouraged students stop by with questions for their advisor, drop-ins are meant for quick meetings only. Enrollment, Change of Major or GPA policy discussions require an appointment.

There are 4 different advising centers across the Volker Campus, and your advisor’s location depends on your area of study.

Scofield Hall, Room 009: Humanities & Social Sciences, Human Behavior, Education & Justice (all except Education)

Manheim Hall, Suite 307A: Numbers, Engineering, Technology & the Cosmos

Bloch Heritage Hall, Suite 221: Business & Management

Education Building, Suite 129: Education

Student responsibilities include:

  • Making time to explore and clarify goals for both major and career.
  • Becoming familiar with the different UMKC webpages and portals.
  • Arriving to advising appointments with questions and topics for discussion.
