Professional Development

The goal of the HR Talent Management team is to provide a range of professional development and training opportunities to meet our community's needs. We have many options available, including instructor-led courses, online learning resources in Percipio, certificate programs, and partnerships with education providers. Additionally, Talent Management offers coaching and consultation services to individuals and work teams. 

Registration

  1. Visit Percipio and login with your university Single Sign-on (PDF)
  2. Once logged in select UMKC from the menu titled “library” at the top left side of the page.
  3. Select the box “custom channel” to open the UMKC channel.
  4. Under the banner, select “Attend”, then select the Instructor Led Training you are looking for.
  5. Use the Learn more and Register link to get course information, save items to your playlist, view list of upcoming sessions, and register.
  6. If there are upcoming sessions, you will have a list with links to enroll or withdraw yourself from a session.
  7. The Percipio system will send an email confirmation with a link to add to your Outlook calendar.

In order to attract, develop and retain top talent, our institution implements structured methods to educate, advance and empower leaders through programs and trainings.

Supervisor Development Series (SDS)

This Supervisor Development Series hosted by UM System is designed for newly hired or promoted supervisors who manage staff. By participating in this program, supervisors and managers will be equipped with the fundamental skills necessary to be an effective manager of talent.

The Series on Leadership Essentials (SOLE)

The Series on Leadership Essentials is dedicated to helping you lead in your role, and is facilitated by the University of Missouri System Human Resources Learning and Organizational Development team. This program focuses on developing leaders in the areas of communication, engagement, giving and receiving feedback, and navigating change. The next four-session series will begin this fall and will include participants from all campuses.

Organizational Perspectives and Leadership (OPAL)

Mid-level leaders help create engaging workplace cultures where day-to-day operations and the strategic orientation of the University and divisions come to life. This professional development program creates a community of practice where open dialogue and skill-building strengthen the universities abilities to meet its goals. 

Administrative Leadership Development Program (ALDP)

The University of Missouri System Administrative Leadership Development Program (ALDP) is a prestigious program that provides professional development opportunities and ongoing support to administrative leaders on all campuses system wide. ALDP enhances effective leadership with a focus on building the foundation for a robust learning environment. 

Henry W. Bloch School of Management: Executive Education Seminars

Bloch Executive Education have developed seminars for individuals or teams designed specifically to build professional and leadership talent. The seminars are one-day programs focused on current business concepts and future trends with emphasis on practical learning. Participants are given the opportunity to build skills to improve decision-making in a safe “practice environment” where they can test assumptions  with peers.

UMKC employees may attend at a discounted rate of $195.00 per person for each session. There are limitations on the discounted rate, please contact Megan Gonzalez or 816-235-6401 to learn more. 

UMKC HR Special Topics

HR offers in-person training and development opportunities throughout the year. These courses are open to all and provide an opportunity to learn and network with colleagues. These courses can be adapted to fit departmental needs.

  • Embracing Multiple Generations: Participants will learn about the five different generations represented in the workplace today and the benefits, challenges and management techniques for working with these generations.
  • Guide to Public Speaking: Join us to learn tips on how to prepare, control your nerves and deliver a great speech.
  • Leadership from Any Chair: We will discuss traditional and transformational leadership and help you discover your personal leadership style.
  • Team Building: Participants will learn the difference between team building and team development and learn tips and strategies to apply team building when needed.

Talk it UP!

UMKC’s new strategic plan states that our foundational commitment is to our people, and we have committed to creating a developmental culture and a learning community. The UMKC Talk It UP! program focuses on people-centered dialog. It provides a set of tools designed to help learning and development conversations.

Talk It UP! includes tools and resources, an online learning module in Percipio, and an in-person training where you will learn how to share feedback and engage in developmental and coaching conversations.
