Out List & Ally Network

From connecting with other LGBTQIA Roos to discovering the network of allies across our campuses, these resources can help you get connected, find community, and succeed here at UMKC.

Join the Out List & Ally Network

Across UMKC there is community, both those who share LGBTQIA identities as well as those who engage in allyship, and this resource is one way to make that invisible network visible. Signing up for either the Out List or the Ally Network is one of the many ways we can show how we create an inclusive, welcoming campus for all our students, faculty, staff and visitors. As of July 2024, we are updating our Out List and have created a second, similar resource, the Ally Network. Read below for more information and to sign up:

The Out List

The Out List is a resource that allows students, potential faculty/staff, incoming students, and community members to see the out LGBTQIA community here at UMKC. This resource is meant only for out UMKC faculty, staff, and graduate students who belong to the LGBTQIA community, not for those who identify as allies but who do not hold any of these identities. Once a year, you will receive an email asking you to update your membership in the Out List-- this will assist us in keeping the Out List up-to-date and relevant.

We also understand that not everyone is able to be out, or to be visibly out on a resource like this, and we hold space for the faculty and staff with these experiences in the knowledge that we are still in community together.

The Ally Network

The Ally Network is a resource that showcases the support for LGBTQIA Roos, whether these allies are in the LGBTQIA community or not and can include UMKC faculty, staff, and graduate students. This includes all self-identified allies of the community, whether or not you have completed Safe Zone or other trainings. Once a year, you will receive an email asking you to update your membership in the Ally Network-- this will assist us in keeping the Ally Network up-to-date and relevant.

FAQ

Why is there an update? The website that held the Out List was having issues, so we are taking this opportunity to create a more sustainable, more clear, and more useful resource that showcases the fantastic LGBTQIA+ faculty, staff, and graduate students across UMKC. Additionally, in updating, we can provide more opportunity for engagement with programs and services across the university.

Why two lists? A number of allies across campus wanted to be listed on the Out List and wanted to be recognized in some way on our website as allies of the community. To keep the nature of the Out List and provide this space, we have decided to create both of these lists.

I'm both an out faculty/staff member and I have taken Safe Zone training-- can I be on both lists? Absolutely! The lists exist independently of each other and fulfill different purposes. Just indicate that you would like to sign up for both when you start the survey.

I am an undergraduate student who would like to be more involved, can I sign up for one of these lists? At this time, no. That said, we encourage you to get involved with one of the many LGBTQIA Student Organizations across campus to find and build community.

I filled out the form but I don't see it on the website yet. Our office has to receive the data and manually enter it into the website, which can take some time, especially as our office currently has one full-time staff member. We are committed to updating both resources at least once a month throughout the calendar year.

So where is the list? Due to restarting the list, we are working to create the new resources! We are hopeful they will be up by the end of Fall 2024.
